Kotonoha is a classical Japanese word that can be translated as both “word” and “language.” Literally, it means “leaves of speech.” This figurative word kotohona is used as our company name to express the love and respect we have for human language.

Our mission

As experts in language expression, we contribute to global communication based on our core values of accuracy,
creativity, and integrity.

Service01

Translation

The predecessor of Kotohona was established in Toronto, Canada in 1997 by the owner Naoko HIROSE. In 2019, Naoko moved back to her hometown Kyoto and registered her translation business based there as Kotonoha & Company.

Naoko and her partners are certified translators, who are officially recognized by the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO) for both ways between Japanese and English. Moreover, Naoko is a corresponding member of the American Translator Association (ATA).

Therefore, Kotonoha translates a wide range of certificates for visa and immigration purposes required by Canadian and American institutions, including schools and government agencies. Since we are certified translators of the ATIO and the ATA, no further certification by notary publics and/or embassies is necessary.

The types of documents we often translate and certify include birth certificates, income and employment records, and school diplomas.

Service02

Language Services

In addition to translation services, we offer language lessons, face-to-face or online, to individuals and groups who are required to work in Japanese and/or English.

Our Japanese and English services include

Translation lessons
(both ways between English and Japanese)

Interpretation lessons
(both ways between English and Japanese)

Presentation lessons
(English or Japanese)

Our lessons are all individually customized because of our belief in LSP (Language for Specific Purposes). Becoming proficient in a foreign language requires vast time and energy. However, once the purpose and goal for acquiring the second language has been defined, a specified approach can be taken to make this learning process successful. Our services will assist you through this journey.

Here’s what we will do. First, we evaluate your language ability (Japanese for English speakers and English for Japanese speakers) in four categories of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Secondly, we will help you figure out your exact goals – persuasive presentation in English, writing a thorough contract, or successful negotiation, etc. Next, we will create a concrete curriculum that best fit your goals which will include coaching of the most effective ways of self-studying as well. Finally, we will prepare study materials specifically catered to this curriculum.
